Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon, is an island 25 miles off the southeastern coast of India. One of the world’s leading tea exporters, tea production is one of the main sources of foreign exchange. What makes this so fascinating is that not a single tea tree grew on the island before 1860. Prior to tea, the island’s main crop was coffee until 1869 when a parasitic fungus began to completely wipe out the coffee plantations. With established growers and systems already in place, a transition to tea happened very quickly. Sri Lanka is often referred to as the “Island of Tea” and produced tea for the famous Thomas Lipton.
Loose leaf tea is sold by the ounce. If you want more than one ounce, simply increase the number.
